By Dennis Lowe About 24 hours before the National Hockey League’s trade deadline, the New York Islanders have traded defenseman Andy Sutton to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a second round draft pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
Sutton was signed by the Islanders on August 10, 2007 as a free agent. He played in 135 games for the Islanders, scoring seven goals while tallying 23 assists. This season, Sutton totaled four goals and eight assists in 54 games played. Sutton ranks second in the NHL in blocked shots (153) and is currently seventh among defensemen in hits (155). “We wish Andy Sutton all the luck in the future” said GM Garth Snow following the announcement of the trade. “For us it’s an opportunity to see Andrew MacDonald, Jack Hillen and Dustin Kohn increase their minutes” said Snow. He added, “They all played extremely well leading up to the Olympic break.” As for the 34-year-old Sutton, it’s a homecoming of sorts for the Kingston native. “I’m ecstatic. It’s an unbelievable opportunity,” said Sutton about joining a Senators team that currently sits on top of the Northeast Division standings. He added, “I thanked general manager Bryan Murray so much for this opportunity. Being an older player and getting a chance to play on such a great team and having a chance to win the Stanley Cup is a dream come true.” "We’re fortunate in that we know him fairly well through a couple of people who have worked with him and been around him," said Murray. "He is a good guy. He’s excited about coming here. He’s going to come in and, I think, fit nicely into the group. He’s excited because he thinks we have a chance to make the playoffs and that’ll help him as well.
The 6-6 245-pound Sutton, whose NHL resume includes stints with the San Jose Sharks, Minnesota Wild and Atlanta thrashers, now gives the Senators a much bigger and tougher blue line. For the Islanders, it’s an opportunity to add yet another quality young player to next year’s roster. “This deal helps us get a second round pick for the future” said Garth Snow.
Snow added, “Although we are young, we feel we can win on any given night.” |
