In order for the New York Jets to hopefully secure a lengthy post-season drive, the team finally came to terms with hold out Darrelle Revis.
Revis, who sat out training camp and missed the all of the team’s pre-season games, signed a 4 year $46 million contact with over $30 million to be guaranteed. “I think it’s a great deal for Darrelle and I think it’s responsible for the club. From that standpoint, I think it’s a win-win,” said Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum in a conference call. As training camp progressed, head coach Ryan and staff had to be prepared if Revis was still unsigned by the start of the season – and all signs pointed in that direction. “This was one of those things where I really wasn’t optimistic,” the general manager said. “I am an optimist by nature, but this was really hard. I was very happy and relieved once it was over.” Regarded as one of the NFL’s top cornerbacks, Revis was seeking a comparable contact to another premiere cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha of the Oakland Raiders, however he was not able to secure the 10 year $162 million which he was seeking. Revis, 25, can now put all of his contact issues to bed for now and focus on Week 1 when the Jets take on the Baltimore Ravens at the New Meadowlands Stadium. Negotiations for the new contact was a constant battle of tug-o-war, however as the season got closer and closer so did the gap between the Jets and Revis. “I don’t think anyone wanted it to take as long as it did, but unfortunately it did” said Tannenbaum. “Now, we can put it all behind us and move on to getting ready for Baltimore.” The Pro Bowl cornerback is an essential cog in the Jets defense and no one knows that more than Tannenbaum and head coach Rex Ryan. “Obviously, Darrelle is a great player,” stated Tannembaum. “He’s our guy and he’s an important piece to what we are trying to accomplish here.”
