The New York Jets worked out in front of thousands of enthusiastic fans at Hofstra’s James M. Shuart Stadium, raising the excitement level for the upcoming football season.
“It’s wonderful that we can come out to Long Island where the fans have been so supportive over the years and give them a taste of what they can expect this season,” said head coach Rex Ryan. Fans who made the trip to Hempstead to see their favorite team, were elated that the Jets once again were putting on the green and white uniforms at Hofstra. “It’s a great opportunity to bring my kids to a smaller venue where they can see the team up close,” said Long Island native, Peter Hochman. “And having the players accessible after practice to sign autographs makes the whole experience unforgettable for any football fan.” “We drove out from Queens to see the team,” said Denise LaFranco. “Our whole family are Jets fans and we only get to about one game a year, so this is great a special day for us. I also think this will be a big year for this team.” Outside of the stadium area, the Jets Flight Crew signed copies of their 2011 Swimsuit Calendar which was shot on location in Aruba. The Crew also interacted with many of the Jets faithful posing for photos and chatting. On the field, second-year quarterback Mark Sanchez looked sharp zipping passes to receivers resulting in chats of J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets ringing out throughout the stadium. Jets running back Ladainian Tomlinson seemed to be the favorite among new additions to this year’s roster. Following practice, eager fans gathered towards the end zone seats to get a look at L.T. and patiently wait for his autograph. Fans draped both Jets and Charger uniforms, along with footballs, mini helmets and other Jets items in hopes of getting what appeared to be the most sought-after autograph in camp. With the addition of Tomlinson and wide receivers Laveranues Coles and Santonio Holmes, the Jets have a more potent offense from a year ago. The acquisitions of linebacker Jason Taylor and defensive back Antonio Cromartie have definitely strengthened up the defense. Veteran quarterback Mark Brunell has been brought in to add his experience in helping the younger Sanchez and former Dallas Cowboy kicker Nick Folk will handle the task of field goals, extra points and kickoffs this season. On Monday September 13, the Jets open their season on ESPN at 7:00 PM as they take on the Baltimore Ravens at the New Meadowlands Stadium. The following Sunday, self-proclaimed Jets hater Tom Brady and the New England Patriots make the trip to New Jersey as the bitter rivalry once again continues in the AFC East. The early start of the season will be a good test as to how the Jets will measure up to their opponents. Following their first two home games, the team will travel to Miami to take on the Dolphins followed by a trip north to take on the Buffalo Bills before returning home to take on Brett Farve and the Minnesota Vikings. After a whirlwind season in 2009, and with depth and experience added to an already sound football team, the Jets aspirations can be nothing short of a trip to this year’s Super Bowl.
