By Dennis Lowe The New York Mets announced they have signed knuckleball pitcher R. A. Dickey to a two-year contract with an option for the 2013 season.
In 2010, Dickey compiled an 11-9 record posting a very respectable 2.84 ERA in 26 starts. The righthander had two complete games including a stellar one-hit performance at Citi Field beating the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0. The Nashville, Tennessee native totaled 174.1 innings pitched last season, striking out 104 hitters while walking only 42. Dickey also became the first player in Mets history to go 6-0 in his first seven starts. “R.A. had a breakthrough season for our organization last year, meriting this new contract,” said Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson. “We expect R.A. to be a major part of our success going forward.” Dickey, 36, first debuted for the Texas Rangers back in 2001. During his five seasons in Texas, he compiled a record of 16-18 before moving on to the Seattle Mariners and Minnesota Twins, bringing a 22-27 record with him to the New York Mets. Entering the 2011 season, Dickey’s new found success has solidified a spot in a rotation which currently includes Mike Pelfrey, Jonathan Niese, Chris Young and Chris Capuano. |
