With Sandy Alderman and the Mets working within a tight budget this winter, the team announced free agent pitcher Chris Young has agreed to terms of a contract pending a physical exam.

Young has been injury prone over the last two seasons missing five months of the 2010 season, however the Mets hope he can stay healthy and regain his form bolstering the team’s rotation.

Following arthroscopic surgery in 2009 on his pitching shoulder, Young again struggled with injuries in 2010 with a shoulder strain. He made only four starts for the Padres last season posting a 2-0 record with a 0.90 ERA over 20 innings. With the uncertainty of his health, the Padres decided not to pick up the 2011 option which was worth $8.5 million.

Young, 31, is considered a low risk high reward acquisition and if cleared to join the team, will be added to an opening day rotation which includes Mike Pelfrey, R.A. Dickey, Jonathan Niese and Chris Capuano.

The Dallas, Texas native debuted back in 2004 with the Texas Rangers spending five years with the Padres and brings to the Mets a career record of 48-34 with an ERA of 3.80.

With a 6’10” frame, Young is one of the tallest players in the history of baseball and relies on a fastball and slider as his go-to pitches. The righthander serves up many fly balls which may serve him well in the pitcher-friendly confines of Citi Field.
