Instead of feeding him to the knuckleball gods, Manuel spared Barajas yet again opting for Henry Blanco in games against the Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers, giving his starting catcher a break following a start in Baltimore where R.A. Dickey’s knuckler gave Barajas a beating behind the plate.

In a season marred by injuries and Mets fans thinking it could not get any worse – it has. After visiting with Dr. David Altchek, an MRI on Johan Santana’s left elbow revealed bone chips resulting in the All-Star pitcher and staff ace to be shut down for the remainder of the 2009 season. Santana will undergo arthroscopic surgery with the expectation of being fully recovered by Spring Training 2010.

The cheery crocus is the harbinger of spring in New York. The first flower to poke its head through the cold soil is usually a sign that another long winter has come and gone.

 

In Port St. Lucie, Florida, spring begins when Mets super fan Pat Lowe, with her Kentucky cow bell and kazoo in hand, takes her seat in the first row along the third base line at Tradition Field. While the players and coaches change from year to year, the 78-year-old Lowe, the mother to seven children, has been a constant at Mets spring training games for the past 28 seasons.
