By Dan Fredricks (Photo: S. Grieco/NYSB) The Long Island Ducks announced the re-signing of four-time Atlantic League All-Star outfielder Ray Navarrete, who becomes the first returning player to be inked for the 2011 season.
Navarrete, a fan favorite at the newly named Bethpage Ballpark, enters his sixth season with the Ducks following a brief stint with the New York Mets organization where he split time between the Double-AA Binghamton Mets and the Triple-AAA Norfolk Tides and the Ducks back in 2006. In 2010, the New Jersey native hit .275 with 13 homeruns, 25 doubles and 54 RBI’s in 86 games. Last season Navarrete set the Ducks franchise record for RBI’s (341) surpassing Doug Jennings. Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Pittsburgh in 2000, Navarrete spent his first four seasons in the Pirates organization and has compiled a career .277 batting average in 610 minor league games. Navarrete, 32, enjoyed his the best professional season in 2009 setting an Atlantic League record of 139 games played while setting five single-season Ducks records including games played (139), at-bats (531), runs (106), hits (164) and extra-base hits (66). In that same season, the All-Star outfielder set franchise records in home runs (72) and doubles (129) while leading the Atlantic League in RBI (96) and finishing second in homeruns with 25. |
