Yes, it’s that time of year again; Baseball in Brooklyn.

The grass is cut, the chalk lines are down and hot dogs are grilling as another outstanding season of minor league baseball has gotten underway at MCU Park.

Wally Backman

As the Brooklyn Cyclones begin their 10th season, optimism is high with the addition of new manager and former New York Mets second baseman Wally Backman.

Backman, who was a key component of the 1986 World Champion Mets, brings his enthusiasm, aggressive style of play and knowledge of the game to a young and energetic Cyclones team.

“We are very excited about having Wally. He’s a great baseball guy,” said Cyclones General Manager Steve Cohen. He added, “He will be a lot of fun for the fans this year.”

Fun does seems to be the magical word at Cyclones games as fans throughout the area support their local team annually. “The fan base here is amazing,” said Cohen. “We came out of the gate unbelievably strong and it’s been that way ever since. It’s been consistent for ten years,” he added.

Last year the Cyclones drew an average of just under 7,200 fans per game and at times throughout every season, tickets can be very hard to come by.

The Cyclones have also come to grips that they must be adaptable to the fans. “As the economy has changed over the years we have had to modify some of the things we are doing here,” said GM Cohen. “Some people are buying smaller [ticket] plans but our group sales are doing very well,” added Cohen.

This year the Cyclones have numerous exciting promotional giveaways including “Official Road Replica” jersey, “Cyclones 86 Wally Backman” jersey, BBQ tool set, Italian and Irish Heritage nights, team posters, fireworks nights, various other t-shirts and much, much more.

For bobblehead fans, the Cyclones have three giveaway dates scheduled which include mini bobbleheads of manager Wally Backman, former Mets pitcher and now broadcaster Ron Darling and current New York Mets first baseman Ike Davis.

With an exciting season of baseball on tap, some great giveaways and the beautiful sights and sounds of MCU Park and Coney Island, tickets once again will become a hot commodity this summer.
