NASCAR, while one of the most popular sports in the United States, is still making inroads into the crowded New York sports scene. The closest NASCAR racetrack to New York City is the Pocono Raceway, about 100 miles away. The only NASCAR race held in the state is at Watkins Glen International, over 250 miles away. But the City That Never Sleeps is becoming more and more interested in the fast-paced sport. As NASCAR gears up for the Chase for the Sprint Cup, the 12 drivers in contention for the championship made a pit stop at the Hard Rock Café in Times Square to meet the press in the heart of the media capital of the world.

By Jason Levy As long as sports have been popular, fans have been looking for any way they can to get closer to the athletes they cheer for. It used to be a difficult task for the average fan to find out what their favorite athlete was doing away from the field, or what they were doing to prepare for the next event. Most athletes kept a wall of agents and public-relations people around them to shield them from unwanted attention. But there has been a significant shift in the way athletes interact with fans thanks to Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and other social networking sites that have soared in popularity. |

NASCAR's Tommy Baldwin Taking One Lap At A Time |

By Jason Levy Photo courtesy of TBR Tommy Baldwin Jr. has NASCAR in his blood. The Bellport, Long Island native has been around racing his entire life. He started by watching is father, Tom Baldwin Sr. race around the tracks in Riverhead, Westhampton, and Freeport in the NASCAR Modified Series and hanging around the shop as a kid. He has been a crew chief for several NASCAR drivers, including Kasey Kahne, Elliot Sadler, Ricky Craven, even his father Tom. When Bill Davis Racing announced it was shutting down in December 2008, Baldwin, who was then a crew chief at BDR, saw a chance to stay in the game and build his own team from scratch. On January 5, 2009 Tommy Baldwin Racing was born.
