www.RedStormSports.com QUEENS, N.Y. (July 2, 2009) – St. John's volleyball associate head coach Mario Treibit was recently honored by USA Volleyball as the recipient of the 2009 Wilbur H. Peck Refree-Emeritus Award for his long and contributory service as a referee and leader in the sport.
This is a tremendous and deserving honor for such an important member of the volleyball community, said Red Storm head coach Joanne Persico. Mario's guidance and knowledge about the sport has had a positive impact on everyone he's worked with. Entering his 10th season on the sideline for the St. John's volleyball team in 2009, Treibit began refereeing in 1975 after he was introduced to the sport by the man whom this award is named after, Wilbur Peck. Peck was the sixth President of the United States Volleyball Association (USVBA), a former national Chairman of Referees, a 1974 recipient of this award, a longtime Board of Directors member and a 1999 inductee into the Volleyball Hall of Fame. Treibit was certified as a national referee in 1978 at the USA Open Tournament in El Paso, Texas. He has served as a referee at the USA Volleyball National Championships through his retirement in 2003. In 1991, he was the head referee at the United States Olympic Committee Sports Festival in San Diego. Internationally, Treibit has officiated in the Pan Am Games; North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA); NORCECA Juniors; Central American Games; World Military Games; Special Olympics World Summer Games and other top international events. Treibit was promoted to associate head coach at St. John's in 2008, after serving as an assistant under Persico since the 2000 season. Under his tutelage, the Red Storm has had some of its most successful campaigns, including capturing the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship three-straight times from 2006-08 and winning the 2007 BIG EAST Tournament before reaching the regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament later that season.
