When the top-ranked men’s lacrosse team comes into town to battle the fifth-best in the country, one would expect nothing less than incredible play on the field with a thrilling, nail-biting ending – or better yet in overtime.

Stony Brook (0-1) came back from two three-goal deficits to tie the score with three seconds left in regulation, however Virginia’s Steele Stanwick netted the game winning goal for the Cavaliers in an 11-10 overtime victory at LaValle Stadium.

“Obviously we’re disappointed with the loss,” said Stony Brook head coach Rick Sowell. “But this is the first game of the season and we’ve got a ton of lacrosse to play.”

An enthusiastic crowd of over 4,300 fans cheered on as the Seawolves refused to give in to the same Virginia team which ended their season in 2010.

As the game entered the fourth quarter, a total of ten goals had been scored. Through the final quarter in regulation and the overtime period eleven combined goals were netted as both teamed turned up the offense with the game on the line.

Stony Brook took a 2-1 lead midway through the second quarter as Drost’s goal gave the Seawolves a two-goal lead before Virginia tied the score at three.

Drost scored again at the 11:52 mark of the third quarter giving Stony Brook its final lead of the game.

Senior Kevin Crowley led the Seawolves with four goals and an assist. Brett Drost scored a career-high three goals and also adding one assist.

Senior goalie Rob Camposa, making his first start since the America East Championship game in 2009, stopped eight shots.

“I thought we played hard,” said Sowell. “Last year’s loss to Virginia ended the season, but this time it’s just the first game. We’ll be prepared and ready to play Marist next week.”
